Living thirty minutes from Detroit for my whole life, I have had the luxury of being surrounded by Detroit’s influence and culture. It is looked at as a city that is run-down, useless, and corrupt. Fortunately, there are people that see the beauty that lies within the walls of the city.
This weekend, I have the opportunity to spend a little over 24 hours giving back to the Detroit Community. My LAS cohort is spending a school day at the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy, facilitating exciting leadership activities for the students there. I’m anxious and overjoyed to meet these high-schoolers and work with such amazing youth. They don’t have nearly the same opportunities that I have and I am honored to be sharing my knowledge with them.
Of course, I am so excited that I get to explore the DIA and indulge in some delicious pizza in Greektown after our day at Jalen Rose. LAS will get nice and cuddly together as we are spending the night on the floor in sleeping bags-and from what I’ve heard- barely sleeping.
Besides working with the students, we will also be giving back by doing community service work outside. Although I’m not exactly sure what it all will entail, nothing feels better to know that I am making a change in someone’s life. I only have high hopes for this weekend and I’m excited to see how this trip will create a new perspective in my life.
